Here’s how you can prepare:

Bring in outdoor items that could become projectiles in high winds. Install storm shutters or board up windows.

Have at least a 3 day supply of water, non-perishable food, flashlights, and batteries.

A hurricane kit should include supplies for several days to help you survive and recover from a hurricane, including:

Water: One gallon per person per day for drinking and sanitation
– Food: A several-day supply of non-perishable food
– Light: A flashlight with extra batteries
– Radio: A battery-powered or hand crank radio with a NOAA Weather Radio
– First aid: A first aid kit with supplies like bandages, ointment, and disinfectant wipes
– Hygiene: Personal hygiene items like deodorant, cotton swabs, and feminine products
– Sanitation: Toilet paper, moist towelettes, and disinfectant wipes
– Shelter: Plastic sheeting and duct tape
– Documents: Important documents like identification, insurance information, banking information, and wills
– Communication: A whistle to signal for help, and a list of important phone numbers
– Other: A can opener, sleeping bag or warm blanket, and a change of clothes for each person

You can also consider including:
– A portable crank or solar-powered USB charger for cell phones
– Hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol
– Bar or liquid soap
– Two masks for each person
– Medication
– Extra cash
– A manual can opener
– A hammer
– Disposable aluminum pans

Charge all your devices in advance and have backup power sources, such as a generator or battery packs, ready. Stock up on candles, lanterns, or flashlights and make sure to have enough blankets in case of cooler weather.

Familiarize yourself with local evacuation zones and routes ahead of time. Create a plan for where you’ll go and how to get there if you need to leave your home, and have a “go-bag” packed with essentials.

Place important papers—like identification, insurance policies, and legal documents—in a waterproof container. Consider also storing digital copies in a secure cloud service so they can be accessed easily in case of damage or loss.

Monitor local news or weather channels for updates.
